Ok - so now for the big pink elephant in the room ... and that is the controversy over the safety of Brazilian keratin treatments. I hate to write about this in one of my first posts, but I feel that I at least nee4d to mention it, and will definitely have to be dealt with in detail at some future date.
For the record, I tend to be a bit of skeptic when it comes to sensationalistic "scare" pieces. I'm talking about the kind of article you find in junk woman's magazines like Allure or Glamour. Right after the "50 ways to please your Lover using Household Appliances" comes the article on "I Went to The Salon, and Woke Up in the Hospital!".
Overall I would say that I am sick of adults who expect the government to always protect them from their own lack of research. I mean, lets face it, at a salon you put chemicals in your hair, and almost none of them are something you would want to drink! So you should be careful etc, blah blah. Is inhaling nail polish any less dangerous? How about the fact that driving your car to the salon has an infinitely higher probability of killing you than any hair treatment does...
I can see right now the lady sitting in the salon getting a BKT, demanding that fans be turned on a full blast, and gas masks worn - only to have her liver swell as she downs her 5th glass of wine of the day, laced with a known poison; alcohol.
grow up people.
I am dying to hear your comments...

WOW!!! So I read your blog thinking I would find the same thing everyone is writing...."Don't do it, it can kill you".... but was happy to see that you actually are trying to find the “truth"!! Normally I don't write on blogs but was impressed that you were not jumping on the wagon like everyone else!
Like many, I have been trying to educate myself about this new procedure that would make my life sooo much easier! I've been reading everyone say how bad it is because of the Formaldehyde. But as I continued my search (decided to actually look up what Formaldehyde is and what it's in) I noticed that this is in tons of things we use day to day!! It's even in baby products!!
These are two of the websites I found that had good information:
http://www.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/factsheets/formaldehyde.htm
http://dermnetnz.org/dermatitis/formaldehyde-allergy.html
Like you said, there are many other things that we do that are worse for us! I mean come on, I remember when Splenda first came out & everyone started saying that you could become extremely sick from using it….. well YEARS later & it’s still out! Long story short, I broke down and decide to at least try it one time and see what I thought. I have to say, I LOVE it! If I NEVER EVER get anything else done, I would be happy with this alone!
The whole process took about 3 ½ hours (which isn’t bad cause it takes that long for my highlights) and to be honest the smell was not bad. I have a harder time getting my highlights and nails done then I do this! The worst part was not being able to wash my hair for four days!! It sucked!!! By the third day I was wondering if it was even worth it! Aahh but then on the fourth day I washed my hair……. OMG I could not believe how wonderful it was!! It’s now been about 2 months and I literally wash my hair and let it air dry.
I am still searching for the “truth” and would love to hear something from the FDA about this product. But after trying it for myself I will continue to use this. Keep up the investigating, maybe you will do us all a favor and get someone to actually take the time to look into the negative & positive of this product.
Lia,
If you want a product that you don't have to wait a few days to wash your hair with, get 4-Hair. I've done the 4-Hair BKT to my hair about 10 times. I'm very pleased with the results. The best part is you can wash your hair right away. I love the 4-Hair shampoo and conditioner, too. If you're interested, I'll send you a link to their website.
I came to this thread because Dr. Oz said BKT is dangerous. But he also says my Bare Minerals foundation is dangerous. I don't think anyone should worry. I do advise that you should not do the BKT yourself. I did my own BKT to save money a couple times, and I inhaled much more fumes than when someone else did it for me.
